Vermont Democratic Party Chair Judy Bevans Applauds Vermont Senators Vote to Proceed to Full Floor Debate of Health Insurance Reform Legislation

Tonight, the United States Senate voted in favor of proceeding to a full floor debate on health insurance reform legislation. In response, Vermont Democratic Party Chair Judy Bevans released the following statement:

"Tonight, the Senate took a historic step on the road to enacting health insurance reform. Thanks to the votes of 60 Democrats, senators will be able to debate the health reform bill on the Senate floor and continue on the road towards delivering health insurance reform to the American people.

Statement Of Senator Patrick Leahy On The Motion To Proceed To H.R. 3590, The “Patient Protection And Affordable Care Act” Senate Floor Saturday, November 21, 2009

Decision time is near on health insurance reform, and I will vote today to end the filibuster so the Senate can begin this important and historic debate to improve and reform our Nation’s health insurance system. Let’s not duck the debate.  Let the debate begin.  Let’s not hide from votes.  Let’s have the courage to vote and stand up and vote on the amendments.  Let the American people know where we stand and not say, well, it never came — it never came up because of the filibuster.

Vermont Democratic Party Chair Judy Bevans Applauds Release of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act

Montpelier, VT – Yesterday, the Senate released the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, which will reduce the federal deficit by $127 billion over the next 10 years while extending health insurance to 31 million Americans. In response, Vermont Democratic Party Chair Judy Bevans released the following statement:

Lanpher, Smith Speak at Rally on Lake Champlain Bridge Closure

Montpelier, VT – On Tuesday, November 17, a coalition of Vermonters and New Yorkers met on the steps of the State House to voice their frustrations regarding the closing of the Lake Champlain Bridge on October 16.

"The fact that this bridge was allowed to deteriorate to the level it has is categorically unacceptable," said Vermont Democratic Party Chair Judy Bevans. "This is the third major bridge closing in under two years in the state of Vermont."

Healthcare Must Not Be Held Hostage

By Judy Bevans

Most Americans want – and need – healthcare reform. Most Americans want and need a public option (note the word “option,” as in “having a choice”) to be part of that reform plan.

Now that we are so close to making this huge stride in helping businesses and individuals afford healthcare, we must not be halted mid-step by the polarizing issue of abortion. The Stupak-Pitts amendment to HR 3962, the Affordable Health Care for America Act, threatens to do just that.

Ebbs and Flows Make History

The results of off-year elections are difficult to predict, contrary to conventional wisdom. This year’s results in two of them in the Northeast are perfect examples.

To all the Mainers who stood up and voted for equality for all families, we extend our condolences that equality did not win the day this time. The forces fighting to perpetuate second-class citizenship for lesbian and gay people prevailed this time, but by a narrower margin than ever before.
