VDP Chair Applauds President Obama’s Nomination of Elena Kagan to the Supreme Court

Montpelier, Vt. - Earlier today, President Obama officially announced his nomination of Elena Kagan to serve on the Supreme Court. Kagan would fill the seat being vacated by retiring Justice John Paul Stevens. In response, Vermont Democratic Party Chair Judy Bevans released the following statement.

“I applaud President Obama’s nomination of Solicitor General Elena Kagan to the Supreme Court. Solicitor General Kagan is possessed of both a brilliant mind and a keen sense of justice, and she has earned the respect of people on both sides of the aisle for her lifetime of work.

“Solicitor General Kagan has demonstrated her strong commitment to public service throughout her career, having clerked for Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall and working as Associate Counsel and Deputy Assistant to President Clinton— and now serving as President Obama’s Solicitor General. And as the first female Dean of the Harvard Law School, the first female Solicitor General, and now as potentially the fourth woman ever to serve on the Supreme Court, she has been a trailblazer throughout her esteemed career.

“As Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Vermont’s Senior Senator Patrick Leahy urged the President to identify qualified, diverse nominees. He has vowed to schedule Solicitor General Kagan’s confirmation hearing promptly, in hopes of confirming her nomination prior to the Senate’s August recess.

“Solicitor General Kagan’s talents and insights will ensure that the American Constitution – and the American Dream – are well-defended on the Supreme Court. Again, I commend President Obama on this nomination, and I wish Solicitor General Kagan a smooth and swift confirmation.”
